The challenge

Suicide rates in Australia have not declined over the past decade with recent statistics showing they may actually be rising. In 2014, 2,864 Australians died by suicide and between 2013 and 2014, the suicide rate increased from 10.9 per 100,000 to 12.0 per 100,000. For every suicide death, as many as 25 individuals will attempt suicide. Based on this estimate, approximately 71,600 people in Australia will attempt suicide in any given year.
